In September 1965, a group of people, mostly women, got together and decided to form a group of dancers to dance in Urretxu and for Urretxu; with the aim of propagating the local national folklore, starting from a cultural point of view and leaving aside mythification.
Since then, a great effort has been made to investigate the customs and uses in order to take the necessary steps to fulfill the initial intention as well as possible. In order to face the repression that existed at that time towards any Basque cultural expression, the group stood firm in the defense of its basic ideas, and thanks to a lot of hard work, they managed to achieve the initially agreed objectives. Lurra Dantza Taldea from Urretxu thus became one of the focal points of the struggle for Basque rights.
Since then, this group has carried out the activities as planned. The main objectives have tended to be the following:
- To propagate and disseminate the expressions of Basque culture and folklore, both through research and through the activities carried out in the performances on stage.
- To promote the interest of the new generations in the cultural, artistic and historical characteristics of the people, thus opening the group to the people towards the discovery of the true free character.
The performances carried out in the Basque Country, in Spain and in Europe have enabled the group to create a long-standing Curriculum Vitae.
The diversity of costumes and dances in Álava, Vizcaya, Guipúzcoa, Navarre, Laburdi, Soule and Lower Navarre is very wide. For this reason, in addition to the knowledge of the members of the group, and other cults in the sector, the wardrobe that is available today has been made up of different costumes. It is worth mentioning that the character of the group is based on a completely cultural and traditional point of view, leaving politics aside.
